Punjab authorities have issued a high alert due to weather forecasts predicting “moderate to very heavy rain” during this year’s monsoon season. The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has issued this warning.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab, under the guidance of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has advised all departments to prepare for the upcoming rains. The monsoon rains are expected to start in July.
In the first week of July, rainfall between 15mm and 55mm is expected in the Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sargodha, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala Divisions. Lighter rains are anticipated in the Multan, DG Khan, and Bahawalpur Divisions.
Monsoon activity will be more intense later in the month. Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Lahore, and Faisalabad could see 25-35mm of rain, with heavier rains between 50-70mm. These areas might face flooding. The DG Khan Division could experience hill torrents. Moderate to heavy rains are also expected in the Sahiwal, Multan, and Bahawalpur divisions.
The PDMA has warned that these rains might increase water levels in local nullahs, streams, and rivers, potentially causing river and flash flooding. Hill torrents might hit DG Khan, Rajanpur, and the Sulaiman range. Urban flooding could impact vulnerable areas across the province.
Murree may face landslides, while dust storms, wind thunderstorms, and heavy rains could damage loose structures like electrical poles, solar panels, and under-construction buildings.
Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this monsoon season.
