The internet and mobile services will remain suspended in major cities of Punjab during the by-election on April 21 (Sunday). The Punjab Home Ministry issued a notification regarding the internet suspension.
The official notice says that the internet and mobile services will be suspended in 13 cities, including Lahore, DG Khan, Gujrat, and others. The Punjab home ministry had previously asked the federal interior ministry to suspend internet on the day of the by-election.
Before the by-elections, the Punjab government imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in some districts of the province, including Lahore and Kasur. In other districts like Bhakkar and Wazirabad, Section 144 of CrPC is also in place from April 18 to 22.
During the general election on February 8, mobile and internet services were also stopped in Punjab and the whole country for two days.
In total, 47 candidates will compete for five National Assembly seats, and 16 Provincial Assembly seats are available. The by-elections are set for April 21 and will include seats in the National Assembly, Punjab Assembly, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, and Balochistan Assembly.
