The Punjab Excise Department has announced that it will be introducing virtual smart cards for vehicle registration in the province to address the existing backlog.
Acknowledging a potential delay of up to a month in the issuance of vehicle registration cards, the department attributed this to issues in the tendering process and assured the public of efforts to expedite resolutions.
According to reports from a local media outlet, the Punjab Excise Department is contemplating the implementation of virtual smart cards as an alternative solution. However, this step requires approval from the provincial government.
A formal request, in the form of a summary, has been submitted to the government for consideration and approval. Once granted, virtual smart cards will be made available to citizens throughout the province.
Vehicle owners will have the option to obtain their virtual smart cards online by completing the requisite registration procedures. The cards can be easily downloaded from the Excise Department’s official website. It is pertinent to mention that it is similar to the e-driving license service launched by the Punjab Police, which enables checking your driving license through their official portal.

In a recent development, the department introduced a doorstep service for car and bike registrations. This service can be accessed by dialing the Punjab Information Technology Board’s helpline at 080008786. Subsequently, a department representative will visit the applicant’s location to facilitate the registration process on-site.
