The Government of Punjab is mulling to ban cars / vehicles older than 30 years in a bid to combat increasing smog levels in Lahore. According to the details, the proposal was taken up in a meeting of the Environmental Protection Council under the chairmanship of Environmental Protection Minister, Raja Basharat.
In the meeting, it was decided to improve Punjab’s Environment Protection Policy in line with international standards and one of the discussion points were banning of cars / vehicles older than 30 years from October to December next year in Lahore.
The meeting also proposed to introduce car-free zones and days in Lahore as well as a plantation drive to combat the effects of climate change.
It is pertinent to mention that Lahore is considered one of the most polluted cities in the world when it comes to air quality with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of over 300 most of the time during months of October to December, as per IQAir.
