The Sindh government has announced that it will launch an Electric Bus Service in Karachi, which is going to a completely environmental-friendly solution the port city’s transportation problems. According to the details, the decision to launch electric buses in Sindh came amid ongoing projects of transportation and back-to-back launch of new routes under the People’s Bus Service in Karachi.
Sindh Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Memon has shared details of the programme on social media. “Transport Department Government of Sindh is going to start New Bus Service in Karachi.” he stated on Twitter. adding that the government will start the test run these electric vehicles from Monday.
The test drive of the new electric buses was conducted from Sindh Archives Complex to Sea View in which Sindh Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon, Labour Minister Saeed Ghani, Adviser to CM Sindh Ijaz Jakhrani, Administrator Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Secretary Transport Abdul Halim Sheikh, MD Mass Transit Authority Captain (R) Altaf Hussain Sario and others travelled and reviewed offered facilities.
Sharjeel Memon said that in the second phase of the People’s Bus Service, the government has begun the test drive of European standard environment friendly buses, and the Electric Bus Service in Karachi would commence in 10 days and expanded as soon as remaining buses arrive.
In the first phase phase of the programme, there are 50 electric buses that have reached Karachi, while rates for fares and the route would be finalized soon. “We are trying to set up a manufacturing plant of electric buses in Karachi and negotiations were under way with companies from China and Europe as well as local companies,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention that the Sindh Government has launched a similar project in March 2021 as it introduced the country’s first electric bus service in Karachi (Tower to Sohrab Goth) with a fare of Rs. 10. However, the service proved to be unfeasible and was later discontinued.
