During Ramadan, a special month for Muslims, the UAE has decided to cut down work time for private sector workers. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) mentioned that employees in private companies will now work two hours less every day during this holy month.
Companies can arrange for flexible or remote work schedules during Ramadan as long as they stick to the daily hours specified for work during this time, and this should match the type of work they do.
Usually, private sector employees in the UAE work for eight to nine hours daily. But during Ramadan, the timing will be reduced by two hours each day. If they work more than the reduced hours, they will receive extra pay for overtime.
Ramadan is expected to begin on March 12, 2024, according to the Hijri calendar published by the Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD). This special work schedule applies to both fasting and non-fasting employees, allowing everyone to participate in spiritual activities and cultural traditions during Ramadan.
For government employees, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has set official working hours during Ramadan. Ministries and federal agencies will operate from 9am to 2:30pm from Monday to Thursday, and from 9am to 12 noon on Fridays, unless the nature of the work requires otherwise.
