The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted ‘above average rainfall’ during the upcoming monsoon season. According to a press release, the Met Office said that monsoon season is expected to begin during the last week of June, while pre-monsoon rains are likely to start in the second week of this month.
The weather forecast states the first phase of the monsoon is likely to continue from July 1 to mid August, while the last phase of the season will continue until the end of September. The country will likely receive above average rainfall of 140.8mm during the July to September period.
However, the PMD, in the weather update, warned that heavy rainfalls may trigger urban flooding in different areas of the country, while cause landslide in hilly areas during the upcoming monsoon. Furthermore, the unusually high temperatures will also enhance melting rate of snow and ice in northern areas.
Meanwhile, the heavy rainfalls will lead to availability of sufficient water to irrigation and power sectors.
