Australia defeated Afghanistan by 3 wickets in the 39th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Glenn Maxwell played one of the greatest innings ever in any World Cup as he made an unbeaten double century with 201 runs.
Meanwhile, the rest of Australia’s batters failed to perform with Mitchell March being the second-highest run-scorer with 24 runs only.
Batting first, Afghanistan was able to set a reasonable target of 292 runs for Australia with Ibrahim Zadran scoring 129 runs and becoming the first Afghani batter to score a century in the history of the World Cup.
Rahmat Shah scored scored the second-highest with 30 runs, while skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi made 26 runs, Azmatullah Omarzai scored 22. Rashid Khan, who supported Zadran during the last five overs, also made 35 runs off 18 deliveries.
Afghanistan will now go up against South Africa on November 9, while Australia will play their last group match against Bangladesh on November 11.
