Islamabad United won the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL 9) claiming the title of champion after defeating Multan Sultans with 2 wickets remaining.
Multan Sultans won the toss and chose to bat first, aiming to set a challenging target for Islamabad United. However, their batting lineup faced a tough challenge from Islamabad’s bowlers, particularly Imad Wasim, who claimed an impressive 5 wickets for only 23 runs. Shadab Khan also contributed significantly with 3 wickets for 32 runs.
Despite a valiant effort from Mohammad Rizwan, who scored 26 runs, Multan Sultans struggled to build substantial partnerships. Usman Khan provided some stability with a commendable knock of 57 runs off 40 balls. However, losses of key players like Yasir Khan and David Willey for single-digit scores added pressure on the team.
Despite the setbacks, Iftikhar Ahmed’s contribution of 32 runs was crucial in helping Multan Sultans reach a total of 159 runs.
In response, Islamabad United began their innings confidently with Martin Guptill leading the charge with a brisk 50 runs off 32 balls. However, they faced some setbacks as Colin Munro, Salman Ali Agha, and Shadab Khan fell cheaply.
Nevertheless, Azam Khan and Imad Wasim played crucial innings, contributing 30 and 19 runs respectively. Naseem Shah’s quickfire 17 runs off 9 balls proved to be the game-changer as Islamabad United chased down the target, securing victory by two wickets.
