Afghanistan continues their winning streak after beating Netherlands by seven wickets in the 34th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Ekana Sports City in Lucknow on Friday.
This was Afghanistan’s third win in a row for the first time in the history of the tournament as before this year’s event, they had only recorded two wins in the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.
While openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran lost their wickets in the early overs, Rahmat Shah (52) and Shahidi (56) had a solid partnership and made sure to guide their team to victory.
After Rahmat Shah was dismissed, Azmatullah Omarzai came to the pitch and scored 31 runs alongside Shahidi.
Earlier, Netherlands could only score 179 runs in 46.3 overs thanks to Aghani spinners Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ahmed.
Max O’Dowd managed to score 42 runs, while Colin Ackermann and Sybrand Engelbrecht managed just 29 and 58 runs.
However, the rest of the batters failed to perform and the team lost wickets at regular intervals with barely anyone scoring over 10 runs.
Afghanistan will now face Australia on November 7, while Netherlands will play England on November 8.
