Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by seven wickets in the 31st match of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Tuesday. This was Pakistan’s first win after four consecutive losses.
Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman delivered a solid performance as both openers scored 68 and 81 runs, respectively.
Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed guided the team to victory with 26 and 17 runs, respectively.
However, Babar Azam still failed to perform and only scored 9 runs off 16 balls in today’s game.
Batting first, Bangladesh had a rough start to the innings as they lost their opener Tanzid Hasan to Shaheen Afridi after he scored nothing during the first over.
However, Liton Das managed 45 runs, but problems continued for the team as Najmul Hossain Shanto (4) and the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim (5) were removed by Afridi and Haris Rauf respectively in the next five overs.
Mahmudullah managed a 79-run partnership with Liton Das and scored 56 runs individually. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan also managed 43 runs, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 25 runs.
The rest of the lower order could not keep up with Pakistan’s bowling attack.
Pakistan will now play New Zealand on November 4 and they have to win the match at all costs if they want to keep their hopes alive for the semi-final.
