Pakistan was able to defeat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the eighth match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in India’s Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Chasing a target of 345 runs, Pakistan kept an impeccable form despite losing their top-order batters, Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam, in just 7.1 overs. However, the match-winning partnership between Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique changed the tide of Pakistan.
The partnership of 176 runs between two two batters proved crucial for Pakistan. Individually, Abdullah scored 113 off 103 balls before walking back to the pavilion, while Rizwan stayed till the end and scored 131 runs, Pakistan’s highest individual score in the World Cup overtaking Ramiz Raja’s 119 against New Zealand in 1992.
Earlier, Sri Lanka was able to set a target of 345 runs with a staggering batting display by Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama. Mendis scored a total of 122 runs off 77 balls, while Samarawickrama managed 108 runs off 89 balls.
Pakistan will now play India on October 14 while Sri Lanka will go up against Australia on October 16.
