As 2024 progresses, Nintendo fans are talking a lot about the possibility of the Nintendo Switch 2. Experts in the industry say this much-awaited machine could be on sale later this year and it might cost about $400. Dr. Serkan Toto, a Nintendo expert, talked to GamesIndustry.biz about his thoughts which match earlier news and he thinks the Switch 2 will come out in 2024. Interestingly, Toto also said that a Switch Pro model was in the works at Nintendo but then they abandoned the project.
The gaming community is excited to hear more about what the Switch 2 will offer. Toto says it will be more of an improvement than a big change or overhaul for the device. It will keep the portability feature that we all know and love with Nintendo, especially because people really like Pokémon games. This method is similar to what Nintendo did with the 3DS. They made upgraded hardware and new features for DS, but maintained the core experience.
Piers Harding-Rolls from Ampere Analysis thinks there will be a small increase in game consoles this year. He partly attributes it on the anticipated release of the Switch 2. The console has been talked about a lot since 2023 and the Gamescom event showcased the expected capabilities, including the advanced DLSS tech.
People are waiting to see if the new machine will work with old games from Switch (aka backwards compatibility) so they can play their current game collection. Furthermore, this feature will also be a determining factors towards the new Nintendo’s popularity. Nintendo has not confirmed anything yet about their Switch 2. However, fans hope they will give some signals during the February Direct event, which is when Nintendo often reveals its plans for the year. For now, the current Switch is still alive with updates rolling out for titles for the platform.
