Amazon has announced that it will be shutting down its SEO Tool Alexa.com on 1 May 2022, twenty-five years after its inception. It must be noted that Amazon is only shutting down Alexa.com, the SEO and Web Ranking Tool, not the popular voice assistant, which is also known as Alexa.
Alexa Internet, Inc. was originally founded in 1996 and later acquired by Amazon in 1999 for a quarter of a billion dollars in stock. The company provided web traffic analysis services based on data it pulled from users who installed the Alexa Toolbar for their internet browser.
Later, the company swapped out the toolbar and starting using a combination of other methods to determine website stats. Alexa.com has been the most popular Ranking and SEO tool to date with its Global Rank Feature being the most popular one.
The Global Rank Feature listed most popular websites on the internet based on their traffic stats and it was used by many media outlets when citing how popular a website had become.
However, this is going to be the end of an era as Amazon has announced that it will be shutting down Alexa.com next year. “Twenty-five years ago, we founded Alexa Internet. After two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your digital audience, we’ve made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022.” said Amazon in a post.
Furthermore, Amazon has stopped offering new subscriptions to the Alexa.com service on 8 December 2021 and all existing customers will continue to have access to their subscriptions until 1 May 2021, when the service will be shut down.
