AMD has launched the much-awaited Ryzen 7000-series CPUs, claiming higher than expected performance for its new Zen 4 processors, which are going to be available on September 27 starting at $299 for the base variant with the 16-core, 32-thread, Ryzen 9 7950X, being sold for $699, which is a full $100 cheaper than its predecessor, the Zen 3 Ryzen 5950X.
According to the details, the initial gen-on-gen performance boost for the new Zen 4 Ryzen CPUs was between 8 and 10% instructions per clock (IPC) increase, but AMD adjusted that number to ~13% with up to 5.7 GHz max frequency, which the company claims is 800 MHz higher than the Ryzen 5000-series and a single thread performance gain of 29%.
However, AMD isn’t just promising stellar gaming performance on its high-end Ryzen 7950X as the company’s CEO Dr Lisa Su demonstrated just how far ahead of intel’s Core i9 12900K its lower-end Ryzen 5 7600X is in terms of gaming. AMD’s new six core CPU bested Intel’s 16-core chip by 11% in F1 2022 with an average gain of 5% across five games.
It bears mentioning that of those give games, Cyberpunk 2077 shows a tie with Intel, and GTA V shows a 3% deficit in gaming performance. However, it is still impressive that a $299 processor is able to compete with a $650 (at launch) chip by its competitor.

The AMD Ryzen 7000-series Zen 4 chips will launch at the end of September along with a whole new motherboard chipset and socket, which will include the X670 and X670 Extreme starting at $125. However, there will be many far more expensive options available from companies like Asus, Gigabyte and MSI.
Meanwhile, the more affordable B650 motherboards will be available from October.
