In an interesting development , Apple was able to claim victory over Samsung to become the leader of the global smartphone market in 2023, as per a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC). This was a remarkable achievement as Samsung has maintained the top position on the list since 2010.
Despite challenges in the global smartphone market, the IDC stated that signs of recovery are evident. The global market struggled with a 3.2% year-on-year decline, reaching 1.17 billion units in 2023 — the lowest annual volume in a decade. However, a positive trajectory emerged in the fourth quarter, witnessing an 8.5% year-over-year upswing to 326.1 million units, surpassing the projected increase and indicating a potential rebound.
The latter part of 2023 saw notable growth among low-end Android players, driven by the rapid expansion of emerging markets. Apple stood out as the top performer, exhibiting positive annual growth and securing the global lead for the first time in history, overcoming regulatory concerns and resurgent competition, especially from Huawei in China, Apple’s largest market.
