Apple unveiled the next generation of its smartphones, including the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max that come with new cameras, a new pill notch design, always-on display and a new chipset unlike its non-pro variants, which still use the A15 Bionic chipset from last year’s iPhone 13 series.
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max is also equipped with the company’s Emergency Satellite Messaging that allows the users to contact emergency services via satellite with clear view of the sky. However, the service will debut only in the US and Canada in November, and will be offered for free the first two years.
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max offer a refreshed design with the pill-shaped cutout at the top of the screen, which was possible by the fact that the cameras inside are now 30% smaller as well as the proximity sensor being moved under-display.
Furthermore, the space around the cutout changes to allow easier access to control for ongoing background activities like Maps or Music, while third-party apps in iOS 16 can take advantage of the area too – for instance, you could get sports scores over there.
Coming to the display, the iPhone 14 Pro offers a smaller 6.1-inches display, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a larger 6.7-inches screen. Moreover, the display on the iPhone 14 Pro variants is also brighter with up to 2,000 nits peak for HDR content, and has a new controller that supports refresh rates as low as 1Hz, which means Always-On Display is finally available on the iPhone.
Available only on the Pro Version, Always-On Display gives access to features like Time, Widgets, and Live Activities.
On the camera front, the iPhone 14 offers a main camera with a quad-pixel sensor, which is a first for Apple but rather old for Android smartphones. The sensor has a 48MP resolution, with an aperture of f/1.78 and 1.22μm pixel size before binning – 2.44μm with binning, resulting in amazing low-light capture and keeping photo size at a practical 12MP.
The quad-pixel sensor also enables a 2x Telephoto option that uses the middle 12 megapixels of the sensor for full-resolution photos and 4K videos with no digital zoom that delivers optical quality at a familiar focal length, which is great for features like Portrait mode.
Moreover, the camera also brings benefits to pro workflows, optimizing for detail in ProRAW. And with a new machine learning model designed specifically for the quad-pixel sensor, iPhone now shoots ProRAW at 48MP with an unprecedented level of detail, enabling new creative workflows for pro users.
There’s also a new 12MP ultrawide camera with large 1.4μm pixels, delivering sharper images with more detail and improving on macro shots too. Finally, there’s a 3x telephoto camera with optical image stabilization.
Meanwhile, Apple has introduced a feature called the Photonic Engine on the software side of the iPhone 14 that will improve low-light photos compared to the iPhone 13. Furthermore, the Action Mode is another addition and works like an action camera by providing better stabilization so you don’t need a gimbal.
On the front, there’s a TrueDepth camera with an ƒ/1.9 aperture that enables better low-light performance for photos and video, while also being equipped with autofocus, which is the first time Apple has introduced the feature on the front camera allowing you to take better low light photos and capture group shots from farther away.
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are both equipped with the new A16 Bionic chipset that comes with a six-core CPU with two performance cores, and four efficiency cores with Apple claiming it to be 40% faster than the competition, while its high performing cores use 20% less power than the predecessor.
The 16-core Neural Engine included in the A16 is capable of 17 trillion operations per second, while the 5-core GPU comes with 50% higher memory bandwidth.
It bears mentioning that both iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will be offered with eSIM only in the US.
The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will come in space black, silver, gold, and deep purple with 128/256/512GB and 1TB of storage with pre-orders starting Friday (September 9) with availability on September 16. Moreover, the price of the iPhone 14 Pro remains the same at $999 (base variant), while the iPhone 14 Pro starts at $1,099.
