Sony has announced a partnership with the highly popular gaming-focused chat app Discord as the company plans to introduce it to the PlayStation built-in social tools by early 2022.
The announcement was made via a blog post by Sony President and CEO Jim Ryan.
“At PlayStation, we’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with one another, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories. It’s in this spirit that we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Discord, the communication service popularized by gamers and used by more than 140 million people every month around the world.” said the blog post.
The post further mentions that teams over at Discord and Sony PlayStation are working hard to connect Discord to the social and gaming experience on the PlayStation Network as the companies aim to make it easier for gamers to hang out, have fun and communicate more easily on both console and mobile.
It bears mentioning that news of Sony’s PlayStation minority investment in Discord comes after reports that the company halted talks of a buyout with tech giant Microsoft, who was reportedly offering $10 billion for Discord.
