Google Assistant currently dominates as the primary choice for Android phones, not just due to default settings on many devices but also for its superior performance compared to other virtual assistants. Google aims to further elevate its capabilities by incorporating generative AI technology from Bard, a versatile language model handling text, voice, and images. Interestingly, a new contender may be emerging in the Android assistant arena.
According to a recent report by Android Authority, ChatGPT, renowned for its advanced language capabilities, is being considered as a potential new assistant option for Android users. While third-party assistants are not unprecedented on Android, with Microsoft’s Cortana and Amazon’s Alexa making attempts in the past, none have managed to dethrone Google Assistant.
ChatGPT could potentially disrupt this status quo. Android Authority uncovered a new activity in the latest Android app version, suggesting voice input support similar to Google Assistant. The app’s code also hints at efforts to make ChatGPT a default assistant, though this feature is not yet fully operational.
However, uncertainties surround the timeline and availability of this potential shift. Notably, Microsoft removed Bing’s default assistant capabilities when introducing its GPT-based LLM experience. There are suggestions that certain features of ChatGPT might be accessible through a Plus subscription, with code hints indicating a Quick Settings tile for ChatGPT possibly locked behind a paywall.
While signs point to ChatGPT’s potential role as an Android assistant, it remains too early to definitively predict the outcome or the specific features that might be introduced.
