After weeks of a gradual rollout, Google Core Update for October 2023 has finally completed on October 19 after after 13 days and 23 hours.
However, this wasn’t the only recent update to Google’s search algorithm as the company launched released a Spam Update for October 2023 just a day prior to its Broad Core Update.
As both updates have been completed by Google, it has affected several websites across the web and improved ranking for many others. However, when looking at reports on social media, Google may have messed up with its latest Core Update.
Core Updates target the primary ranking system in Google’s search algorithm and aim to promote more authoritative and trustworthy content while downgrading low quality sites in the process.
The updates lead to a lot of turbulence in search engine rankings for many websites and at the end of the day, some may see an increased visibility and traffic, while others experience drops or downright removal from the search engine.
Google recommends reviewing your content, expertise, and use experience for sites that have been negatively impacted in order to identify areas of improvement through additional high-quality content and necessary tweaks.
However, some reports suggest that Google’s latest October 2023 Core Update might have messed up and did the opposite of what’s its suppose to do. While trying to improve search results, the algorithm seems to have promoted some spam or misleading websites while downgrading official sources.
Ever since the update, there are websites with top ranks and content that lacks basically everything. With many keywords, Google seems to be promoting websites with incomplete content or posts / articles with a single sentence instead of detailed alternatives.
The following is just one example of the problem being reported by several people after the latest Core Update:
I think in general, many sites with long-form, informational content have been crushed in this update. Google seems to have changed what they want to show in the SERPs. Plain and simple. It doesn't mean the site is bad, but it's not what Google wants to show people.
