According to a recent report by Sammobile, Google has decided to delay the launch of its highly anticipated next-generation AI chatbot, Gemini, until early next year. Initially slated for a November 2023 unveiling at events in California, New York, and Washington, D.C., the delay comes after internal testing revealed challenges in Gemini’s handling of certain non-English queries.
Gemini, hailed as Google’s most advanced conversational AI, was intended to position itself as a superior alternative to OpenAI’s GPT-4. However, Google CEO Sundar Pichai opted for a postponement upon discovering that Gemini’s performance with non-English queries did not meet expectations.
Recognizing the significance of global language support for Gemini’s success, Google believes it would be premature to introduce the chatbot to the broader market until it demonstrates proficiency in handling queries beyond English.
Despite the delay, Google remains optimistic about Gemini’s potential to surpass GPT-4. Private tests have reportedly shown Gemini outperforming its competitor, owing to its superior computational power.
Emphasizing the commitment to delivering a “competitive and state-of-the-art” product with Gemini 1.0, Google CEO Pichai, and Vice President Sissie Hsiao have highlighted the chatbot’s remarkable capabilities. Hsiao provided an example, stating, “I’ve seen some pretty amazing things. Like, if I’m trying to bake a cake, draw me 3 pictures of the steps to how to ice a three-layer cake, and Gemini will create those images. These are completely novel pictures, not just pictures from the internet.”
