Google has introduced Ultra HDR image sharing in RCS chats for its Messages App. This update enables users with compatible devices to send and view Ultra HDR photos seamlessly within the messaging application.
The Ultra HDR image format is designed to be compatible with Android 14, building upon the standard JPEG format by incorporating additional HDR metadata. While it can be viewed on any device, the full spectrum of colors and tones is best experienced on devices with HDR-compatible displays.
Initially detected by TheSpAndroid, support for Ultra HDR images was noted in September, just before the launch of the Pixel 8 series. The presence of the – bugle.support_ultra_hdr flag within the apk confirmed this discovery. Notably, Google Messages appears to retain the HDR gain map in Ultra HDR images, ensuring that the sent photo maintains its Ultra HDR quality when saved, especially in Google Photos.
In theory, when an Ultra HDR image is sent or received in a Google Messages RCS chat, the image should automatically display with the applied HDR metadata, provided the device supports HDR. However, distinguishing an Ultra HDR image within Google Messages is currently not possible.
While Google has not officially announced the availability of Ultra HDR support in Google Messages, it is anticipated to roll out gradually to all Android 14 devices in the coming weeks. In a related development, Adobe has also incorporated support for Ultra HDR image editing in Lightroom mobile for Android. This enhancement allows users to edit and export HDR images directly within the app, eliminating the need for a separate application.
