Google Pixel 8 owners are going to get the LLM AI model, Gemini Nano, initially exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, is now confirmed to be available on the Pixel 8 as well. Google had faced criticism for limiting the Gemini Nano to the Pro model, leaving Pixel 8 users disappointed.
Initially, the absence of Gemini Nano on the Pixel 8 was attributed to hardware limitations, despite both devices sharing the same Tensor G3 chipset. The only difference lies in the RAM capacity, with the Pixel 8 having 8GB and the Pro model offering up to 12GB. Interestingly, the AI model functions on the base Samsung Galaxy S24 variant, adding to the confusion.
In response to queries, Google assured that Gemini Nano would be rolled out to all Pixel 8 units. They emphasized that varying memory capacities could result in different user experiences with large language models. Through extensive testing, Google found a solution to integrate LLM on the Pixel 8.
Gemini Nano will be accessible as a Developer Preview in the upcoming Pixel Feature Drop update expected in June. Users can activate developer options by tapping the build number in Settings > About Phone seven times. This update will bring two key features to the Pixel 8: summarizing recordings into bullet points and enhancing Gboard Smart Reply for quicker and more conversational responses.
Additionally, the Pixel 8 Pro will receive extended features and benefits from Gemini Nano, further enhancing its capabilities.
