The shift from physical SIM cards to eSIMs is gaining momentum, offering potential security advantages as they are integrated into devices. However, transferring eSIM profiles between devices has traditionally been challenging, often requiring carrier assistance or new SIMs. Google is working on a solution — an eSIM transfer tool for Android, allowing users to securely move mobile plans to new devices without physical SIMs.
While Google did not provide specific details or a launch date, users setting up Pixel 8 devices noticed its implementation as early as October. Recently, a Galaxy S24 Ultra user setting up their device with Samsung’s SIM transfer tool encountered an eSIM transfer option, suggesting wider compatibility across brands and models in the future.
Samsung had previously introduced its own eSIM transfer tool within One UI 5.1, limited to Galaxy devices. This recent development indicates broader compatibility, showcasing a potential collaboration between Samsung and Google. Notably, T-Mobile is the only confirmed carrier supporting this eSIM transfer functionality in the US, hinting at the possibility of wider adoption by other carriers in the future.
