Just hours before Rockstar intended to officially unveil the first trailer for GTA VI, an account, now suspended, leaked the trailer on X (formerly Twitter). Despite the official premiere scheduled for Tuesday, December 5th, at 9 AM ET, Rockstar swiftly responded by releasing the complete trailer on its official YouTube channel.
The trailer affirms various details that have gradually surfaced about GTA VI over the past two years, confirming the Vice City setting and introducing the series’ first female protagonist with elements inspired by Bonnie and Clyde’s story. According to the trailer, GTA VI is slated for a 2025 release. In a subsequent press release on Monday, Rockstar specified that the game would be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X / S that year.
A decade in the making, GTA VI’s inaugural trailer could have been as simple as the Roman numeral for six, sparking discussions and speculation for an indefinite period. Fortunately, the trailer exceeded expectations, showcasing GTA staples such as high-speed chases, chaotic gunfights, stacks of illicit cash, and an overall American-flavored hedonism against the backdrop of Vice City, a fictionalized version of Miami.
The trailer primarily focuses on a lone protagonist, a woman named Lucia. Initially seen in a prison jumpsuit, the trailer suggests Lucia will engage in criminal activities with her boyfriend post-release.
The press release also provides a brief overview of the game, stating, “Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet,” as per Rockstar.
GTA VI’s unveiling has been marked by a slew of leaked information. Earlier this year, a UK teenager was identified as the culprit behind last year’s leak, which disseminated 90 videos from the development process. Furthermore, this week, a TikTok video emerged claiming to feature leaked footage from the game, purportedly originating from a Rockstar employee’s child. As of the current publication, these TikTok videos are still accessible, showcasing wide shots of the game’s setting displayed on a computer monitor.
