Instagram has started testing new methods for age verification of users. In addition to simply uploading your ID, which takes up to two days to verify, the company has now started to verify age of users using two more options / methods.

According to the details, Instagram is now using video selfie to for age verification of users on the platform. The user can use this option by following the on-screen instructions that will guide them through the entire process if they pick this method of age verification.

Once you take the video, it’s shared with Yoti, a company specializing in age verification, and Instagram’s partner in this undertaking. This method takes up to 20 minutes and uses Yoti’s tech, which estimates a person’s age based on their facial features and then deletes the video.
The second age verification method being used by Instagram is social vouching, which is exactly what it sounds like. The user will have to ask their followers to confirm their age and the person vouching much be 18 or older at the time. Furthermore, it will take three people to vouch for your age and they need to respond to the request within three days.

Instagram is doing age verification for two main reasons, which include protection of children on the platform by making sure users are over the age of 13 (older in some countries) and in order for the app to set profile to private and restrict contact with adults if you are between the ages of 13 and 17.
