Apple is reportedly working on launching the iPhone 14 Series with only eSIM support for network connectivity starting September 2022. The company reportedly plans to completely ditch the physical SIM card slot for its upcoming iPhone 14 models. According to several reports, the Cupertino-based tech giant plans to implement the change next year with the iPhone 14 Series.
iPhone have been equipped with the eSIM support since the launch of the iPhone XS back in September 2018. However, all models of the iPhone at the moment have a Nano-SIM card slot alongside the eSIM feature. MacRumors has received an anonymous tip that Apple is in talks with major U.S. carriers to prepare for the launch of the eSIM-only iPhone 14 Series by September 2022.
According to the details, the tipster has shared a seemingly legitimate document mentioning that timeframe for this initiative, although the document does not specifically mention Apple or the iPhone. However, the September 2022 might imply that Apple is planning to remove the physical SIM card slot starting with the iPhone 14 Series, which will now come with an eSIM only.
Earlier, it was being reported that the company plans to remove the physical SIM card slot with the iPhone 15 models and it might end up being the case since nothing is confirmed at this point. It is also worth nothing that eSIM service isn’t available in all country and it is not offered by all service carriers.
What is an eSIM?
The eSIM is a digital SIM that allows users to activate a cellular plan on their smartphones without having the insert a physical SIM card (usually a Nano-SIM card).
It is pertinent to mention that Apple has been offering eSIM support on its iPhone models since the launch of the iPhone XS back in September 2018. However, all phone models at this point come equipped with a Nano-SIM card slot alongside support for the eSIM.
The move might seem aggressive but removing the physical SIM card option will have several advantages as well. It would certainly bring better water resistance on the iPhone and free up much needed space for other components inside the housing of the smartphone.
It bears mentioning that a tipster who goes by Dylan has also tweeted to corroborate the news of Apple removing the physical SIM card slot in favor for the eSIM in the iPhone 14 Series. “I am in agreement with recent rumors regarding the removal of the physical SIM card tray.” said the tipster.
I am in agreement with recent rumors regarding the removal of the physical SIM card tray. In February, I had shared the following information below: https://t.co/zOyeJr0V1d
