The U.S tech giant Microsoft might be working on the Surface Trio, a Triple Screen Phone, as seen by a patent filed by the company for a ‘Multi-Panel Display Device’. The patent was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), who posted the patent on 23 December 2021.
According to Windows Central, the patent documents reveals many technicalities of the device along with a sketch showing the design of the triple screen phone with three separate hinges. The new device will eliminate the main problem of the Surface Duo, which was the absence of the outer screen.
The Display No. 3 on the device, which will likely be called the Microsoft Surface Trio, will act like a primary screen when folded sitting on top of the other two displays. However, the device will feature a dual-screen experience when unfolded like the current Surface Duo.
The sketch also reveals that the Display Panel 1 will be a lot bulkier than Display Panel 2 and 3 as it will likely house the main components of the phone, including the battery, logic board, and SoC. The upcoming device might end up being huge compared to the current Microsoft Surface Duo.
The patent also that Display Panel 1 and 3 may be able to pivot in any suitable pivot range relative to the Display Panel 2, using the two hinges. The Display Panel 1 and 3 will pivot, such that the three display panels are stacked on top of each other in order to reduce the overall form factor of the device.
It bears mentioning that Microsoft has made no announcement regarding the Surface Trio or a Triple Screen Phone and there is no telling when the device will be released. However, it is confirmed that the company is working on a device with three displays based on the patent documents.
