Microsoft has surprised users by announcing the discontinuation of support for Android apps in Windows 11, effective March 5th, 2025. This includes the end of support for the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), a feature introduced in 2021 that allowed users to easily run Android apps on Windows 11.
The decision was revealed through an update in developer documentation, affecting the Amazon Appstore on Windows and any apps relying on WSA. Starting March 5th, 2024, users will be unable to install new Android apps via the Amazon Appstore, though existing apps can still be used until March 5th, 2025, with updates available until then. The future of these apps beyond that date remains uncertain.
Amazon has confirmed the end of support, stating that developers can no longer submit new apps for Windows 11 after March 5th, 2024. Updates for existing apps can be submitted until the Amazon Appstore on Windows 11 closes.
Microsoft’s decision has left the fate of Android apps on Windows 11 uncertain. While the company hasn’t provided official reasons, possible factors could include low adoption rates or technical challenges.
For users interested in running Android apps on Windows, the discontinuation of WSA support means returning to using third-party Android emulators as an alternative solution.
