Twitter has rolled out its new Twitter Blue Subscription that gets the user a ‘Blue Verified Check Mark’ for &7.99 per month. According to the details, the new Twitter Blue Subscription is now live for iOS users (iPhones and iPads) and Twitter has completely turned out its normal verification system.
It must be noted that new Twitter Blue Subscription is only available on iOS at the moment in certain regions that support that previously supported the Blue Subscription. For the moment, you can’t sign up on the web or Android devices and there is no confirmation regarding when the feature will be rolled out to everyone.
Furthermore, some users already subscribed to Twitter Blue are reporting that they are being prompted to subscribe again and specifically to the new tier. Moreover, it is still unclear when Twitter plans to launch the feature on a global scale for all devices, including web and Android or countries where Twitter Blue isn’t available yet.
The biggest change to Twitter Blue Subscription is the addition of a Blue Verified Check Mark (Tick) next to your name, a feature that was previously available for free to influential people, celebrities, journalists, registered companies, and government accounts via a detailed verification process by the social media company.
The subscription also adds features like priority in replies, mentions, search, half as many ads, ability to post longer videos, undo tweets, edit tweets, and a lot more. However, all of the extra features are still labeled as “coming soon” and not available at the moment.
Furthermore, the $7.99 price is also labeled as a “limited time offer” which means that Twitter may increase the subscription cost ones the feature is rolled out on a larger scale. Moreover, Twitter has confirmed that Twitter accounts created on or after Wednesday aren’t eligible for the subscription at this time.
Twitter has also started distinguishing between accounts that were verified by paying for the new Twitter Blue Subscription or from the previous system, and you can see who was verified which way by clicking on the check mark on their profile. Additionally, Twitter says that legacy verified accounts (verified before the new Blue) can have their check mark taken away any time any for any reason.
Elon Musk has received a lot of criticism over the new verification method as critics think that it will lead to rise in misinformation as anyone could subscribe to the service and receive a blue check mark in order to appear as a verified account to scam people. However, the Tesla Founder and CEO says that paid account verification might actually help to curb spam and fake accounts on the platform and make it more trustworthy.
