The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority PTA) has unbanned the short video-sharing application TikTok in Pakistan on Friday.
It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had blocked access to TikTok in Pakistan under the provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 on 21 July 2021. “The action was taken due to the continuous presence of inappropriate content on the platform and its failure to take such content down,” the PTA said in a press statement.
However, this wasn’t the first time that the short video-sharing application was banned in Pakistan. The authorities have banned TikTok in Pakistan four times in the course of the last few years over immoral and obscene content being uploaded on the application.
However, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has unbanned TikTok in Pakistan and restored the services of the social media application.
“PTA has restored the services of TikTok on assurances of the Platform to control immoral / indecent content.” said the regulator in a press release regarding unbanning TikTok in Pakistan. “Subsequent to imposition of ban on 20 July 2021, PTA remained in communications with the TikTok management.”

Keeping in view the assurances, the Authority has decided to lift the ban on TikTok forthwith.”
However, the PTA said that it will continue to monitor the platform in order to ensure that unlawful content contrary to Pakistan’s law and societal values is not disseminated on the social media application.
