ByteDance is planning to launch 30-minute long videos on TikTok to challenge YouTube. This move, however, differs from the short-form video format of TikTok. This feature has been reported by the social media consultant Matt Navarra, who spotted the new option on the iOS Beta App and also Android App in the UK.
TikTok started with 15-second videos, which later grew to a one minute. Later, TikTok responding to the user’s need, increased the time limit three minutes and then it was again increased up to 10 minutes. Presently, ByteDance is experimenting with a 30-minute video limit to attract more users and content creators who might compete directly with YouTube that has no specific time limit.
This action could create opportunities for uploading entire TV episodes and other long-form content on TikTok. The platform supports fast-forwarding of videos by tapping and holding the right side of the video, which makes it much easier to watch longer material. In the latest step of this diversification process, ByteDance had already tried 5-minute videos.
Despite the fact that TikTok is known for its short videos, the company aims to expand its target audience with long formats. It is unclear how the users will respond to the increasing video lengths. TikTok owner ByteDance is also going international as the company opens up offices in Canada, Australia and the United States. In 2023 the company recorded revenues amounting to about $110 billion more than those by Tencent Holding. It remains unclear when the 30-minute video feature on TikTok will have a wide release.
