WhatsApp is testing a feature that will show full preview of images and videos sent as a document on Android, according to a new report by WABetaInfo, a service that tracks upcoming features on the encrypted messenger. The rich document previews are currently available for PDF files, while images and videos sent as documents show no previews inside WhatsApp.
WhatsApp compresses the quality of images and videos sent over the messaging platform, therefore, many users opt to sent images and videos as documents to retain the original quality of the content. The rich document preview feature has been rolled out to WhatsApp beta version 2.22.5.11 on Android.
According to the details, WhatsApp is planning to enable the rich document preview feature in the next few updates, which means that the update could be available in the coming weeks to a larger user base until the, the preview feature will only be available for PDF files.
The rich document preview feature on WhatsApp will allow users to preview an image or video in a similar fashion to a PDF file from inside the messaging platform instead of opening it in a third-party application. WhatsApp compresses images and videos sent on the platform and using the documents feature to send these files can help retain the original quality of the content being shared.
