WhatsApp, a widely used messaging app, is preparing to introduce cross-platform messaging that will allow users to communicate with people on other messaging platforms. This change is happening because of a new law in the European Union that wants big tech companies to have more competition. WhatsApp’s new feature, called “chat interoperability,” will let people in the EU talk to contacts on different messaging apps, even if those contacts don’t use WhatsApp.
This feature was found by WABetaInfo in a beta version of WhatsApp for Android. It’s still being worked on and isn’t available yet. In the beta version, users will have a new section where they can turn on interoperability. This will let them send messages to people on other apps.
Even though messages will still be encrypted, there could be differences in how different apps encrypt messages. This might mean that chats from other apps will be in a separate place in WhatsApp. WhatsApp is warning users to be careful when using this feature.
Furthermore, there are concerns for increase of scams because of the new feature since different apps have different rules about privacy, so your data might be handled differently on other apps.
Despite these challenges, this change by WhatsApp is good for people in the EU. The WhatsApp cross-platform messaging feature will give users more options to talk to others online.
It’s not clear yet if these changes will happen outside of the EU. But even though the feature is optional, it shows a positive move towards connecting different messaging apps.
