YouTube is planning to develop a dedicated app for Apple’s Vision Pro platform in response to the increasing demand for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) experiences. This decision comes after the launch of the Apple Vision Pro App Store, which currently lacks apps from major content providers like YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify.
Initially, it was reported that there were no plans for a YouTube app compatible with Vision Pro. However, a YouTube spokesperson, Jessica Gibby, later confirmed that a Vision Pro app is indeed in development, driven by high demand, particularly from Juno users. While no release timeline was provided, YouTube is currently prioritizing an enhanced experience on Safari until the dedicated app is ready.
Apple’s foray into spatial computing with Vision Pro has received mixed reactions regarding its support for immersive content. Vision Pro users can currently access YouTube content through Safari or third-party applications like “Juno,” but these methods have limitations in delivering a comprehensive spatial experience and supporting YouTube’s extensive library of 360-degree and 3D videos.
Apple is actively working on improving support for WebXR content, potentially enabling the viewing of VR videos through Safari in the future. As the Vision Pro gains popularity, developers are expected to create more VR content for the headset, and major developers may launch their apps on the Vision Pro App Store to cater to the growing user base.
