President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler of Abu Dhabi, has passed a law to establish Abu Dhabi Hazardous Materials Management Centre under the jurisdiction of Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters. This center aims to establish a comprehensive hazardous material management system in Abu Dhabi that will draw heavily from best practices around the world and place community and environmental safety at its core.
Most important functions of the center is to develop and implement general policies and strategic plans that ensure a consistent implementation of regulations relating to hazardous materials across the emirate. It will also oversee all the activities of various local sectors and entities that deal with such materials to make sure they comply with legislation.
The center will also set up a central operations room to track hazardous materials, devise ways of handling and storing hazardous materials safely confiscated by the police force, initiate an electronic system whereby disclosure of information on such hazardous materials would be conducted, reporting on all data related to hazardous material will be carried out, and conducting scientific studies and research on hazardous materials with relevant authorities.
This initiative shows that Abu Dhabi is determined to improve safety measures and environmental protection in connection with hazardous materials by considering all aspects of this issue through a wide perspective and before it happens.
