Dubai will enforce a city-wide ban on single-use bags, including plastic and paper, starting June 1. Previously, businesses were required to charge 25-fils for single-use plastic bags. However, starting June 1, all single-use bags will be prohibited in retail stores across Dubai, with no obligation for stores to provide free replacements. The initiative encourages shoppers to bring their own reusable bags.
The Dubai Municipality released an awareness guide, stating that biodegradable bags are also banned because they can leave microplastics in landfills, harming animals and entering the food chain. However, there are some bags that are exempt from the ban, which include:
- Bread bags.
- Bags used for products packaged online.
- Trash bin liners.
- Wrapping bags for vegetables, meats, fish, and chicken.
- Laundry bags.
- Electronic device bags.
- Garbage bags.
- Grain bags.
Violating the policy incurs a Dh200 fine, which doubles for repeated offenses, capped at Dh2,000. Shoppers are urged to report non-compliant stores to the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism.
New regulations extend beyond bags. Starting January 1, 2025, Dubai will ban plastic stirrers, Styrofoam containers, cotton swabs, straws, and cups. By January 1, 2026, single-use plastic cups, lids, cutlery, food containers, and plates will be prohibited, with similar penalties for violations.
The municipality’s online guide, available in Arabic and English, addresses common queries about the ban and suggests eco-friendly alternatives. It targets individuals, businesses, and institutions, aiming to promote sustainability.
