Commuters between Dubai and Sharjah will experience a reduced road speed limit on Al Ittihad Road, dropping from 100 km/h to 80 km/h. The decision, made in collaboration with the Dubai Police General HQ, stems from a recent study evaluating factors such as entrances/exits, intersection proximity, traffic accident frequency, and recent area developments, as explained in a statement by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) issued on November 14. Al Ittihad Road serves as a crucial link between Dubai and Sharjah.
To facilitate awareness of the revised speed limit, the RTA has not only updated traffic signs along Al Ittihad Road but has also marked the road with red lines indicating the area where the reduced speed comes into effect. The reduced speed limit is applicable on the stretch between Sharjah and Al Garhoud Bridge.
The decision to alter speed limits takes into account various factors, including road design speed, the observed speed of the majority of drivers (85th percentile speed), urbanization along the road, pedestrian activity, the presence of essential facilities, historical traffic accident data, and traffic volume.
For those who overlook the updated road signs and markings and continue driving at speeds exceeding 100 km/h along this section, the consequences include a minimum fine of Dh600, in accordance with the UAE’s Traffic Law – Ministerial Resolution No. (178) for the year 2017 on Rules and Procedures of Traffic Control. Stay informed and drive safely.
