The Dubai Road Naming Committee has introduced a new mechanism for residents to suggest names for roads in Dubai. The approach combines elements of heritage, identity, and futuristic aspirations, utilizing a combination of names and numbers for easy identification of internal roads.
Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality and Committee Chairman, emphasized the correlation of names with numbers, aligning with a decision from the Executive Council. The innovative methodology aims to reflect Dubai’s excellence and position as a global model city.
For the first time, names will influence land use and development projects. The Committee employs inference to link names, signs, and site-specific features, enhancing visitor association with locations. Road names will convey key elements through distinctive characters on road signs, facilitating seamless navigation.
The initiative began with naming roads in the Al Khawaneej 2 area, drawing inspiration from local trees and flowers. Public participation is encouraged, with plans for community involvement in subsequent phases.
Established by Executive Council Decision No. 35 of 2021, the Committee, chaired by the Director General of Dubai Municipality, includes representatives from Dubai Culture, RTA, and Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Centre. It focuses on identifying roads needing names, suggesting options, and reviewing previous names, emphasizing a commitment to public engagement.
