The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai completed traffic improvements at 14 locations in 2023, reducing travel time by up to 60% and increasing road capacity by as much as 25%. These efforts are part of RTA’s Quick Traffic Improvements Plan, intending to implement 45 traffic solutions across Dubai in 2023-2024.
Abdulla Yousef Al Ali, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, emphasized their commitment to executing leaders’ directives and accommodating demographic and urban expansion. The goal is to advance the infrastructure, expand road network capacity, and align with Dubai’s sustainable growth for the well-being of the population.
The plan includes ongoing improvements throughout 2024, targeting 31 sites, including key areas like Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Al Awir Street, Abu Baker Al Siddique Street, Al Rebat Street, Al Khail Road, and Al Meydan Street.
Notable improvements in 2023 included the upgrade of the free right exit from Al Asayel Street to Financial Centre Street, doubling capacity, improving traffic flow, and reducing travel time from Business Bay to Financial Centre Street from 5 minutes to 1 minute.
Substantial changes on Al Fay Street added lanes to the roundabout, utilizing existing infrastructure to cut travel time by 50% for entering and exiting the Dubai Production District and Dubai Sports City District.
The introduction of a free exit from Al-Saba Street to Garn Al Sabkha Street toward Dubai Marina reduced congestion and travel times by approximately 60%. At the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and Al-Asayel Street, a dedicated U-turn reduced travel time for exiting Al Barsha to Umm Suqeim Street en route to Al Khail Road from 15 minutes to 5 minutes.
Other measures included widening the right-hand exit from Al Rebat Street to the Business Bay Crossing, eliminating queues, minimizing traffic overlapping, and improving safety standards. Additionally, the exit on Emirates Road towards the Maliha Street intersection was widened, increasing capacity from 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles per hour, enhancing traffic circulation.
CEO Al Ali stressed ongoing efforts to enhance traffic flow in the emirate, acknowledging the impact on travel times and congestion. The commitment to implementing further improvements in key areas reflects the RTA’s dedication to creating a more efficient and accessible transportation network for Dubai’s residents.
