The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has announced the significant progress of the Al Meydan Street Improvement Project, reaching a completion rate of 85%. This project spans from the Al Khail Street intersection to the Cyclists Club and involves a series of enhancements aimed at improving road infrastructure in the region, which will help to reduce peak-hour traffic time from eight minutes to one.
Key aspects of the project include expanding the street’s capacity from two to a minimum of three lanes, replacing the Al Meydan Roundabout with a T-shaped signalized surface intersection, and transforming the Al Quoz Roundabout into an extended street along the route. These initiatives align with RTA’s commitment to continually enhance Dubai’s infrastructure to keep pace with urban growth, supporting sustainable development and ensuring smooth traffic flow on the city’s roads.
Hamad Al Shehhi, Director of Roads, Traffic and Roads Agency at RTA, highlighted the recent improvements, stating, “The goal of these works was to significantly reduce travel time on Al Meydan Street, bringing it down from eight minutes to just one minute in the morning and from seven minutes to less than one minute in the evening. Additionally, an average congestion reduction of 93.3% at intersections is anticipated.”
The upcoming phase of the Al Meydan Street Improvement Project will focus on modifying entrances and exits of Mohammed Bin Rashid City to enhance traffic flow in the area. Landscaping works are also planned at the new Al Meydan intersection. The entire project is slated for completion by the beginning of the second quarter of 2024.
In a bid to promote alternative modes of transportation, RTA has inaugurated a bicycle lane tunnel in the Al Meydan area. This 160-meter-long and 6.6-meter-wide tunnel can accommodate around 800 bicycles per hour. The transformation of the surface intersection of the cycling track into a tunnel aims to facilitate free and continuous movement on Al Meydan lane, reducing waiting times for cyclists. This strategic move connects development projects in the Al Meydan area to Nad Al Sheba and the Cyclists Club through the dedicated cycling track.
