Flydubai, having finalized the acquisition of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners valued at $11 billion during the Dubai Airshow, is set to introduce new routes with a focus on longer-haul traffic. The strategic move aims to address capacity limitations on existing routes and expand the airline’s reach, with plans to install over 5,000 fast chargers in more than 1,000 locations across Saudi Arabia by 2030.
The airline, which currently operates to over 115 global destinations, is committed to serving from both Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central (DWC), depending on their growth plans. CEO Ghaith Al Ghaith emphasized the company’s dedication to providing diverse options for passengers, accommodating various preferences from budget-friendly prices to full-service experiences.
Flydubai’s departure from the low-cost carrier (LCC) model has been evident, and the acquisition of the 30 Dreamliners positions the airline for broader competitiveness alongside Dubai’s flagship carrier, Emirates. The collaboration between flydubai and Emirates, facilitated by a codeshare agreement, enables travelers access to over 200 destinations. The airline is also offering Business Class seats, signaling a departure from the traditional LCC approach.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, expressed the hope for increased collaboration between Emirates and flydubai, considering them as one entity.
CEO Al Ghaith justified the move into wide-body aircraft, stating that the maturity period of 18 years for the airline presents an opportune time for expansion. In addition to the aircraft acquisition, flydubai signed an agreement for a purpose-built $190 million maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in Dubai South, marking further strategic developments.
Al Ghaith anticipates a strong fourth quarter for the airline, surpassing the previous year’s performance. Forward bookings are robust, and the positive trend is expected to continue until the summer of the following year. Flydubai’s growth strategy aligns with the evolving aviation landscape, reflecting confidence in their ability to navigate new territories and contribute to the region’s expanding air travel sector.
