PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) according to a statement by the presidential Elysee Palace on Thursday.
The 42-year-old will be self-isolating for seven days but “will continue to work and take care of his activities at a distance,” the statement added.
The office is currently working to identify everyone the president has come into contact with in recent days while his upcoming trips have been cancelled, including a scheduled visit to Lebanon.
French President Emmanuel Macron has recently been in contact with the EU chief Charles Michel and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who are also self-isolating after the development.
Coronavirus cases have been surging in France with more than two million confirmed infections and 59,400 deaths since the pandemic took hold of the country.
