NIGERIA: As many as 43 rice farmers lost their lives in brutal killing, the country’s President has described it as an insane Nigeria attack. The attackers reportedly slit the throats of innocent farms.
At least 43 farm workers were killed and six wounded working in rice fields in northeastern Nigeria, local news agencies have reported.
Militant group Boko Haram is suspected in the brutal killing of farm workers. The assailants said to have tied the farmworkers and slit their throats in the village of Koshobe, near Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.
The Nigerian President Muhammad Buhari has expressed his grief over the killing of farmers on rice fields.
Official Spokesperson to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigerian President, Garba Shehu tweeted “President M. Buhari has expressed grief over the killing of farmers on rice fields at Zabarmari, in Jere Local Government of Borno State, describing the terrorist killings as insane.”

“I condemn the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief. May their souls Rest In Peace.”
The President Buhari also said the government had given all the needed support to the armed forces “to take all necessary steps to protect the country’s population and its territory.”
Babakura Kolo, a leader of a local militia fighting armed groups in the region have conferred that 43 bodies were received, along with six others who were seriously injured.
It is also reported that some farm workers are still missing and among them are 10 women.
The victims were labourers were from Sokoto state in north-west Nigeria, who had travelled to the north-east for work. They were murdered on Saturday, they were attacked as they were working on a rice field at Garin Kwashebe. Over 60 workers were contracted to harvest rice paddy, 43 were slaughtered and six seriously injured.
Ahmed Satomi a member of the local parliament said “were attacked because they had on Friday disarmed and arrested a Boko Haram gunman who had been tormenting them.” Report from premium times.

Funeral
The funeral of the slaughtered farmers in Insane Nigeria attack, took place on Sunday, the governor of Borno state, Babagana Zulum, attended the victims’ funerals. Expressing his grief he told the journalists:
“It is disheartening that more than 40 citizens were slaughtered while they were working in their farmlands,”

“Our people are in very difficult situations, they are in two different extreme conditions: in one side, [if] they stay at home, they may be killed by hunger and starvation; on the other, they go out to their farmlands and risk getting killed by the insurgents. This is very sad.”
The Boko Haram fighters have killed 22 farmers in last month, in two separate incidents. The militants have targeted the farmers before who they suspect of passing information to the military.
