Iran has launched numerous explosive-laden Shahed drones towards Israel and the sound and sight of these drones were quickly noticed over Iran’s own skies. Videos circulating online captured them flying over Iranian cities like Kermanshah, Khuzestan, and Andimeshk. They were also observed crossing into Iraq, over cities such as Sulaymaniyah and Karbala.
Reports from Iraqi security sources confirmed the sighting of these drones flying from Iran towards Israel through Iraqi airspace. The drones, believed to be Shaheds, emitted a distinctive buzzing noise as they flew low over Iraq, a sound familiar to Ukrainians who have endured similar attacks from Iranian-made drones launched by Russia.
Iran’s Shahed drones, known as the “AK-47” of Tehran, are inexpensive, mass-produced, and easily exported to conflict areas where Iran has interests. They have been used extensively by Iranian proxies, including Houthi in Yemen and Syrians. The drones have also been employed in attacks on Western ships in the Red Sea.
Iran’s Shahed Drone Specifications
The launch of these drones from Iran, over 1,000 kilometers away from Israel, suggested a deliberate avoidance of surprise. The drones flew low over Iraq, possibly to evade radar detection.
If Iran’s aim is to overwhelm Israeli air defenses, launching slower drones ahead of faster missiles could be a strategic move to synchronize the attacks. Despite their simplicity, Iranian drones pose a significant threat to Israel because of its effectiveness, low-cost, low-technology systems when used in large numbers.
