Iran launched drones towards Israel in retaliation to attack by Israel on its consulate in Syria. Israeli TV reported the attack was expected around 02:00 on Sunday. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed they fired missiles and drones at Israel, according to Iranian state media.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were on high alert and monitoring all targets. Israel’s prime minister called a meeting of his war cabinet. Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iraq closed their airspace, while Syria and Jordan activated their air defenses.
Iran’s actions were seen as a response to an attack on its consulate in Syria on April 1, which killed seven military officers. Iran accused Israel of the attack, although Israel didn’t confirm or deny involvement.
Just before news of Iran’s drone launches, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated their defensive systems were ready for any scenario. He expressed gratitude for the support of the US, Britain, France, and other countries.
After the attack, US National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson affirmed President Biden’s unwavering support for Israel’s security. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned Iran’s “reckless” actions and pledged continued support for Israel’s security and that of regional partners.
