In a tragic incident, Perry High School in Iowa became the scene of a shooting on the first day back after winter break. According to the Dallas County Sheriff, emergency responders rushed to the school, situated about 40 miles northwest of Des Moines, as students were arriving for their classes.
The shooting was reported at approximately 7:40 a.m., with emergency vehicles from various agencies converging on the school premises. The incident unfolded just days before the Iowa caucuses, which are set to kick off the 2024 Republican presidential primary process on Jan. 15.
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who was scheduled to start a political event in Perry on Thursday morning, confirmed on social media that the event, described as a “discussion and prayer” gathering, would proceed. Mr. Ramaswamy expressed his concern, urging people to “pray for the community” in Perry.
Tragically, the shooter at Perry High School succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as per information from multiple law enforcement officials briefed on the matter. Additionally, three individuals, including two students and an administrator, were injured in the shooting. The extent of their injuries is yet to be disclosed.
Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante revealed that the incident occurred before the start of the school day, minimizing the number of students and staff present in the building. “Luckily, so there were very few students and faculty in the building, which I think contributed to a good outcome in that sense,” he said during a news briefing.
The sheriff stated that authorities were alerted to the active shooter situation at around 7:37 a.m., and the first officer arrived within seven minutes, finding multiple gunshot victims. The identity of the shooter has been established, but the sheriff refrained from providing further details at this time.
“There is no further danger to the public. The community is safe,” Sheriff Infante assured. “We’re just now working backwards trying to figure out everything that happened.”
President Joe Biden is closely monitoring the situation, with a White House official confirming that senior staff have been in contact with the Iowa governor’s office. The investigation is ongoing, and the community remains in shock and mourning as they grapple with the aftermath of this tragic incident.
