A powerful 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico on Monday that killed at least one person while damaging several buildings and knocking out power for the residents, who scrambled outside for safety.
According to the U.S. Geologic Survey, the earthquake in Mexico, which comes on the anniversary of two earlier devastating quakes, hit around 1:00 pm (local time) and was centered 37 kilometers (23 miles) south east of Aquila near the border of Colima and Michoacán states.
The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 15.1 kilometers (9.4 miles), which would have amplified its impact and the U.S Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also issued a tsunami warning for parts of Mexico’s coast, saying that waves reaching 1 to 3 meters (3 to 9 feet) above the tide level were possible.
It is pertinent to mention that two deadly earthquakes had struck Mexico on the same date (September 19) in 1985 and 2017.
