The Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) has approved a draft law for real estate leasing in Sharjah for the year 2024. This decision follows several changes made to the draft law during the sixth meeting of the first regular session of the eleventh legislative term. Counselor Dr. Mansour Mohammed bin Nassar, who heads the Legal Department of the Sharjah Government, commended the SCC for completing the legislative process. He emphasized the significance of the draft law in regulating the relationship between landlords and tenants in Sharjah, aligning it with existing laws.
Dr. Nassar then focused on Sharjah’s attractiveness to investors and family members. He also stressed that the current real estate regulations that govern buying, selling, and other real property rights in Sharjah need to be updated. The previous law, enacted in 2007, has served well but is now becoming antiquated, having remained in force for about 17 years. Amendments are an absolute must to move ahead with the times and fill the gap between the stakeholders’ requirement.
Khaled Falah Al Suwaidi, the Customer Service Director at Sharjah Municipality, stated that the mentioned law would contribute to Sharjah in tourism, investment, and residential attractiveness. He noted that the draft law has provisions that are intended to improve the quality of life and match up with the growing real estate sector.
During the meeting chaired by Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, the Council reviewed the draft law’s definitions, objectives, competencies, and other legal aspects. Members discussed various provisions aimed at regulating landlord-tenant relationships. They presented opinions on different articles, and government representatives clarified legal interpretations and implementation aspects.
At its fifth plenary session, the Council approved the draft law, making it the second item discussed in the eleventh legislative term. The Secretary-General announced that the next meeting would address the Council’s recommendations regarding the Sharjah Tourism and Commerce Development Authority’s policy.
