The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) in the UAE has issued a reminder to the public to promptly inform their telecom service providers in the event of mobile device loss or theft.
According to a press statement from the UAE authority, customers can report such incidents through customer service call centers, live chat services on websites, and other affiliated channels with the telecom operators.
Upon reporting the loss or theft, the service provider will verify details and seek customer approval to initiate the blocking process for the device. The device’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) will be added to the blacklisted devices database.
Within 24 hours of the report, the block will be activated, restricting access to any networks via the device. TDRA added that unblocking the device, once recovered, will also take 24 hours.
TDRA emphasized the importance of residents utilizing available measures to protect both data and devices. Recommendations include activating two-step verification, enabling biometric access features, and utilizing device-tracking functionalities when available.
Eng. Saif Bin Ghelaita, Director of Technology Development Affairs at TDRA, commented on the matter, stating, “The surge in electronic services, both in government and the private sector, has led the majority of users to depend primarily on mobile phones for a wide array of transactions. These transactions encompass governmental processes, financial payments, and service applications.”
TDRA clarified that residents must provide specific and precise information while making the report, including personal details, the time and location of the loss or theft, and device specifications.
